Deputy Voter Registrar

The Harris County Democratic Party wants your help registering voters before the next election.  Registering voters is quick, easy and provides a real service to the effort of turning Texas blue.  Below are some details about what is required to be a Deputy Voter Registrar, and a list of upcoming trainings if you are interested in attending.

Texas election law provides for County Voter Registrars to designate individuals to assist in registering eligible voters. These individuals are appointed as Volunteer Deputy Registrars and operate under state rules and supervision of the County Voter Registrar.   The Harris County Democratic Party encourages all that are eligible to become a Volunteer Deputy Registrar.

To be eligible to serve as a Volunteer Deputy Voter Registrar, you must be:

  • at least 18 years of age
  • a citizen of the United States
  • a resident of Texas

You must not be:

  • determined by a probate court to be totally mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated and thereby without the right to vote.
  • finally convicted of a felony or, if a felon, fully discharged of sentence, including any term of incarceration, parole, supervision, completed period of probation, or have been pardoned (Texas Election Code, §13.031(d)).  A person is not considered to have been fully convicted of an offense if adjudication of guilt was deferred (H.B. 1226, 82nd Leg.).
  • finally convicted of an identity theft offense (Texas Penal Code, § 32.51).
  • finally convicted of a Class A misdemeanor relating to performance-based compensation for voter registration (Texas Election Code, §13.008).

By law, all volunteer registrar appointments expire on Dec.31 of even-numbered years. That means that if you registered voters last summer and haven't taken a class yet, you need to take the class again.

Training is mandatory for anyone who is interested in becoming a new or renewed Volunteer Deputy Voter Registrar. That means applicants must be retrained before they can be reappointed as a Volunteer Deputy Voter Registrar.

See our event calendar for additional trainings being hosted by Democratic Clubs and Organizations.

Are there plans to update the upcoming deputy registrar trainings for 2017?

The Harris County Tax Office website has a more comprehensive list of deputy voter registrar training sessions. There are several that will take place before September 20th:

OK Folks, I looked on the calendar and found one voter registration training event in September (see below). Given that voters have to be registered by Oct 11, it’s not a lot of time!
Tue, September 20, 6pm – 7pm
Where: Area 5 Campaign Headquarters 3800 Spencer Hwy Suite L Pasadena, TX 77504 (map)
Description: Join us for VDVR training presented by Mike Sullivan’s office at the Area 5 Democrats Campaign Headquarters.
Located in the Fitness Connection center, Spencer & Burke on the Burke side.
Please RSVP on Facebook also. https://www.facs/597090463796038/

Where can I find an updated training schedule? This one only goes to 8/13.
Like probably 90% of the folks out there, I’ve put off thinking about voting and checking that my registration is still good until now. So September is the critical time to get folks registered. We should strike while the iron is hot!

Are there any DVR training opportunities in late August or September (last date listed here is Aug 13)?

How long is the training? How many hours?<<

The training session today, Aug. 22, at Sheltering Arms Senior Services Center took a little over an hour — 2 p.m. to about 3:15 p.m.

That’s the schedule I followed – it’s not up to date…warning to anyone else who’s looking to get training, do not follow the schedule unless you can confirm that the training is actually happening. I drove across town and there was no training for the day listed.

Showed up to the 7/16 training as listed above and was told that there was no training. Can we get accurate information so that we’re not wasting time running around the city?

I am trying to get a few others to join me as I renew my DVR. The republicans have at least three training sessions for volunteers to attend!! My friends and I are going to get our training, but I would LOVE to see this page on our Harris County Democratic Party website to have at least a few trainings scheduled for our volunteers to get DVR trained as well as get it updated and keep it current! These are dates from 2013!!!
