OUR PARTY

NOTE: It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Muriel Stubbs last Sunday. Muriel was a dedicated volunteer here at the HCDP HQ for years. She was also a former English teacher and was the op-ed writer of ROADWomen's monthly newsletter, The Register. There will be private services for Muriel in her hometown of Port Arthur, but her brothers have promised that her Houston friends will get to honor her at a celebration of her life on Sunday, May 21st at American Legion Post 560 Garden Oaks, 3720 Alba Rd, Houston, TX 77018. The time will be announced soon.

  5. April 19, 2017ACTION ALERT: STAND AGAINST ANTI-LGBT DISCRIMINATION IN TEXAS, 8:00 AM, Equality Texas, 221 E 9th St, Austin, Texas 78701
    • A lot of news has been coming out of North Carolina recently about their fake repeal and replacement for HB 2, their discriminatory bathroom bill. What must not be overlooked is that the alternative bill adopted by the North Carolina general assembly leaves transgender residents without protections when using bathrooms or changing facilities that match their gender identity.
    • Now, lawmakers in the Texas House are introducing their own fake replacement for SB 6, called HB 2899 which is set for a hearing on Wednesday, April 19th. HB 2899 will be amended by the author to be CSHB 2899, and would ban municipalities and school districts from enforcing ordinances, orders, or other measures that protect transgender Texans from discrimination when using restrooms or changing facilities that correspond with their gender identity.
    • If you are able, please join us at the Texas Capitol in Austin on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 19th to testify or drop a card in opposition to HB 2899. More information will be distributed soon.
  6. April 22, 2017MARCH FOR SCIENCE, 11:00 AM, Sam Houston Park, 47C, 1000 Babgy, Houston, Texas 77002
    • The March for Science is a celebration of our passion for science and a call to support and safeguard the scientific community. Recent policy changes have caused heightened worry among scientists, and the incredible and immediate outpouring of support has made clear that these concerns are also shared by hundreds of thousands of people around the world. Mischaracterization of science as a partisan issue, which has given policymakers permission to reject overwhelming evidence, is a critical and urgent matter. It is time for people who support scientific research and evidence-based policies to take a public stand and be counted.

  • April 25, 2017STUDENTS AGAINST HATE RALLY, 11:30 AM, University of Houston-MD Anderson Library, 4800 Calhoun Road, Houston, Texas 77004
    • Join the movement to rally aginst LGBTQ discrimination on Tuesday, April 25th from 11:30am - 12:30pm in front of MD Anderson Library at the University of Houston, Main Campus. Texas lawmakers are pushing forward 25 bills that justify hate against LGBTQ Texans. Bills like SB6 permit open discrimination against transgender Texans and are aggressively targeting LGBTQ youth. These bills send more than just a message – they are an attack on our most marginalized communities. We must remain vigilant and organized to make it clear that LGBTQ Texans deserve to be respected, protected, and safe.
    • We're organizing accross the state to send our own message to lawmakers - We won't tolerate hateful legisalation. Rally aginst LGBTQ discrimination on Tuesday, April 25th from 11:30am - 12:30pm in front of MD Anderson Library at the University of Houston, Main Campus!
  • April 29, 2017PEOPLE'S CLIMATE MARCH, 10:00 AM, Charles H. Milby Park, 2001 Central St, Houston, TX 77017
    • Hosted by the Sierra Club: "The Saturday march will take place one day before Trump’s 100th day in office, giving the event special importance, organizers said. ' On April 29th, it’s going to be much clearer to Donald Trump that he won’t drag America or the world backwards on climate without the fight of his life,' Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune said in a release. 'Our planet is in crisis, and voices from around the nation must and will be heard.' The last People’s Climate March, in September 2014, had a turnout of more than 400,000 people in New York City, and was hailed as the largest climate march in history. That march preceded the United Nations climate summit, held just days later at the U.N. headquarters in New York."

HOW TO BECOME A PRECINCT CHAIR

So, are you interested in being a precinct chair? Here are the steps you will need to take:

    1. Find out what precinct you're in:
    2. See if there is currently a precinct chair for your precinct HERE
    3. If there is not a precinct chair currently listed for your precinct and you would like to step up and make a difference, begin the process by contacting your county's Democratic Party (see HOUSTON AREA DEMOCRATIC PARTIES section above for links)

    WHO REPRESENTS ME?

In these difficult political times, it is crucial to know not just who represents you in Congress and the Texas Legislature, but also how to contact that person's office. As a constituent, you are their employer and it is your right to let your opinion be known about legislation.

Obviously the first step is identifying who exactly represents you. You should keep handy the contact information for your two US Senators, your US Congressional Member, your State Senator, and your State Representative. There are several sites that can perform this service for you, but here are my recommendations:

    1. Who Represents Me (maintained by the Texas Legislature)
    2. Who Are My Representatives (maintained by Politiwatch)
    3. Find Your Elected Officials (maintained by Common Cause)
    4. Find Your Reps
    5. Contacting Congress (Members of Congress only)

Each of these services should provide you with a link to each representative's webpage that contains contact information.
