RALLIES AND PROTESTS

  1. March 20, 2017RALLY AT CULBERSON'S OFFICE: HANDS OFF OUR HEALTHCARE!, 12:00 PM, 10000 Memorial Dr # 620, Houston, TX 77024
    • From Indivisible Houston: "Congressman John Culberson and the GOP are trying to force a bill through Congress that would take away our health care. So we’re going to his office on March 20th!
      The Culberson/GOP health care plan:
-Makes Texas families pay even MORE for health insurance
-Ends Medicaid as we know it
-Threatens coverage for seniors and people with disabilities
-Weakens protections for people with pre-existing conditions
-Cuts health care funding for low-income families to give tax breaks to the rich
Join us! Let’s tell him and his pals that Texans deserves better.
Getting there: We advise carpooling or using public transportation. Some parking is available in the surrounding neighborhoods and near the I-10 freeway. Bus routes 070 Memorial and 049 Chimney Rock/S Post Oak pass near the office building."
  2. March 24, 2017GREG ABBOTT, THE PEOPLE'S STATE OF THE STATE PROTEST, 11:00 AM, Hilton Americas-Houston, 1600 Lamar St, Houston, Texas 77010
    • Texas Governor Greg Abbott will be giving his State of the State address in Houston. Let's gather outside the Hilton Americas and give him our version of the State of the State.
  3. March 31, 2017TED POE PROTEST, TEXANS WILL BE HEARD, 11:30 AM, 10000 Energy Dr, Spring, TX 77389-4954
    • Efforts to schedule an in-person town hall meeting with Ted Poe have been frustrated by his office. Despite our efforts, we have been unable to obtain a commitment that such a meeting will occur or even a time frame within which it might occur. We are taking the town hall to Ted. If you want your voice to be heard by your congressman, if you want to stop the Trump agenda and if you want to make a difference, this protest is for you.
  4. April 15, 2017TAX DAY MARCH, 12:00 PM, location TBD
    • During his campaign, Trump repeatedly promised to release his tax returns, but he has shown no sign that he actually plans to do so. Let us protest on Saturday, April 15th to show him that we still want to see those tax returns!
  5. April 15, 2017NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION MARCH TO TED CRUZ' HOME
    • We pay OUR taxes which pay for Ted Cruz' salary. Now we want to let Ted Cruz know that he is failing to represent thousands of his constituents. This should be of great concern to Cruz, because he could be booted out of his senate seat in 2018. This is a peaceful march. We will meet at Eleanor Tinsley Park and march down Allen Parkway to Lost Lake, which is in front of the Royalton (3333 Allen Parkway--Ted Cruz' apartment in the sky). When we arrive, we will deliver a petition requesting a Town Hall (stay tuned for petition).
  6. April 22, 2017MARCH FOR SCIENCE, time TBD, location TBD
    • The March for Science is a celebration of our passion for science and a call to support and safeguard the scientific community. Recent policy changes have caused heightened worry among scientists, and the incredible and immediate outpouring of support has made clear that these concerns are also shared by hundreds of thousands of people around the world. Mischaracterization of science as a partisan issue, which has given policymakers permission to reject overwhelming evidence, is a critical and urgent matter. It is time for people who support scientific research and evidence-based policies to take a public stand and be counted.
ON APRIL 22, 2017, WE WALK OUT OF THE LAB AND INTO THE STREETS.
  7. April 29, 2017PEOPLE'S CLIMATE MARCH, 10:00 AM, location TBD
    • Hosted by the Sierra Club: "The Saturday march will take place one day before Trump’s 100th day in office, giving the event special importance, organizers said. ' On April 29th, it’s going to be much clearer to Donald Trump that he won’t drag America or the world backwards on climate without the fight of his life,' Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune said in a release. 'Our planet is in crisis, and voices from around the nation must and will be heard.'  The last People’s Climate March, in September 2014, had a turnout of more than 400,000 people in New York City, and was hailed as the largest climate march in history. That march preceded the United Nations climate summit, held just days later at the U.N. headquarters in New York."
  8. May 1, 2017MAYO 1 DIA SIN INMIGRANTES/ MAY 1ST DAY WITHOUT IMMIGRANTS, 11:00 AM, Guadalupe Plaza, 2311 Runnels St, Houston, Texas 77003

LOBBY DAYS

  1. March 13, 2017HOUSTON GLBT POLITICAL CAUCUS’S HOUSTON GOES TO THE CAPITOL!
    • The Texas Legislature is in session now, and we have local elected officials that wish to pass discriminatory bills right here in the state of Texas. The Houston GLBT Political Caucus is willing to stand up and be a local voice in the movement for fully realized equality. On March 13 we are traveling to Austin to speak with our elected officials about stopping these discriminatory measures. All you need to bring is yourself! We’ll provide transportation from Houston to Austin and information on all the issues so you’re ready and able to ask your elected leaders to end discrimination against LGBTQ Texans, reject anti-immigrant policies that turn Texans against our neighbors, and flush the job-killing, anti-transgender SB 6 down the drain of history.
  2. March 13, 2017HOUSTON FEDERERATION OF TEACHERS LOBBY DAY
    • Join fellow educators as we advocate for improved public schools: adequate funding for all public schools, changing the recapture payment for HISD, teacher pay raise, improved SPED programming.
  3. March 15, 2017THE IDES OF TRUMP
    • On March 15th, 2017 each of us will mail the White House a postcard that publicly expresses our vocal opposition to the new president. And we, in vast numbers, from all corners of the world, will overwhelm Washington with the President’s unpopularity and our opinions of his agenda. We will show the man, the media, and the politicians how vast our numbers are and we will bury the White House post office in pink slips, all informing the President that he’s fired!
  4. March 20, 2017ALL IN FOR EQUALITY ADVOCACY DAY (Urge state lawmakers to protect LGBT Texans from discrimination), sponsored by Equality TexasACLU of TexasHuman Rights CampaignTexas Freedom Network, and Transgender Education Network of Texas
    • Join us to have face-to-face conversations at the Texas Capitol about LGBTQ equality issues that matter most to you and your family. This is an opportunity for YOU to ask state leaders to pass inclusive policies that protect all Texans, including our children; and end discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.
  5. March 21, 2017TEXAS LATINO EDUCATION COALITION DAY OF ACTION
    • Join the Texas Latino Education Coalition (TLEC) for our Day of Action as we tell the Texas Legislature to fully fund an equitable and first-class K-12 and higher education for ALL Texas students. #AllMeansAll
  6. March 23, 2017: EARLY CHILDHOOD DAY AT THE CAPITOL
    • Join us for a day of educating and spreading the word to our State Legislators about the importance of Early Childhood to all of Texas. You will have a chance to learn from our leaders in Early Childhood as well as visit your Legislator.
  7. March 27, 2017TEXAS CAMPAIGN FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
  8. March 29, 2017TRTA DAY AT THE CAPITOL
    • TRTA Day at the Capitol is set for Wednesday, March 29, 2017 on the heels of the 64th Annual TRTA Convention. Day at the Capitol raises awareness on Texas public education retirees’ most important issues and encourages immediate legislative action to address them.
  9. April 4, 2017REALTOR DAY AT THE TEXAS CAPITAL
  10. April 5, 2017PLANNED PARENTHOOD TEXAS LOBBY DAY 2017
    • On Wednesday, April 5, you’re invited to join hundreds of the loudest, proudest and pinkest reproductive rights advocates in the state as we come together to demand that Texas women and families be heard. Together, we will educate legislators on reproductive health care issues and share personal stories of Texas women and families who depend on and support the vital health care services Planned Parenthood provides. You’ll also have the chance to meet other activists and supporters who believe in Planned Parenthood’s mission and hear from women’s health champions. Don’t miss out!
  11. April 10, 2017BLUE RIBBON LOBBY DAY, hosted by Texas Democratic Women
    • A day when women from all over Texas come to the capital to lobby for issues of importance to progressive women.
  12. April 12, 2017STATE EMPLOYEE LOBBY DAY 2017
    • Lobby Day is our chance to take a stand for the future of Texas and for our jobs. It is a critical part of our ongoing fight for economic and social justice for state workers and citizens. We will meet at the Capitol lawn, march, rally, and then meet with our legislators and present them with our program.
On April 12th, TSEU is calling for a massive show of strength to tell the legislature that we will fight to restore funding for public services, protect state employee benefits, and win a real across-the-board raise.

HOW TO BECOME A PRECINCT CHAIR

So, are you interested in being a precinct chair?  Here are the steps you will need to take:
  1. Find out what precinct you're in:
  2. See if there is currently a precinct chair for your precinct HERE
  3. If there is not a precinct chair currently listed for your precinct and you would like to step up and make a difference, begin the process by contacting your county's Democratic Party

WHO REPRESENTS ME?

In these difficult political times, it is crucial to know not just who represents you in Congress and the Texas Legislature, but also how to contact that person's office.  As a constituent, you are their employer and it is your right to let your opinion be known about legislation.

Obviously the first step is identifying who exactly represents you.  You should keep handy the contact information for your two US Senators, your US Congressional Member, your State Senator, and your State Representative.  There are several sites that can perform this service for you, but here are my recommendations:
  1. Who Represents Me (maintained by the Texas Legislature)
  2. Who Are My Representatives (maintained by Politiwatch)
  3. Find Your Elected Officials (maintained by Common Cause)
  4. Contacting Congress (Members of Congress only)
Each of these services should provide you with a link to each representative's webpage that contains contact information.  You may also use the list below (should be comprehensive for all representatives of Harris, Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Liberty, Montgomery, and Waller Counties).

THE INDIVISIBLE GUIDE

What is the Indivisible Guide?

Here's how the New York Magazine recently described the document:  "The Indivisible Guide began as a Google Doc after Trump’s election, and since December, it has been downloaded over a million times. Knowing the limits of a publicly shared Google Doc, the organizers (all former congressional staffers) decided to launch a fully designed, easy-to-parse website with everything you could possibly need to know about resisting the Trump agenda.

The volunteer organizers of the Indivisible Guide have two objectives: “to demystify congressional advocacy” and to “support the community of local groups putting the Indivisible Guide into action.” There is a tool kit for new group organizers, a calendar for daily national events and calls to action, and the guide itself, which details how to properly get your congressional members to work for you."

Basically, a group of former congressional staffers compiled a document of strategies employed by the Tea Party to affect the legislative agenda.  Groups have sprung up all over the country to use these tactics to protest, advocate, and persuade elected officials against the use of tyranny.

Download the guide.  Print it.  Study it.  Share it.  It may very well be the key to our withstanding and overcoming the politics of hatred, fear, and divisiveness coming at us from Washington and many state capitols.

LOCAL INDIVISIBLE GROUPS

There are many Indivisible and Indivisible-affiliated groups around the Houston area.  Not every group has a dedicated webpage, Facebook group, or Meetup group, so for the most complete list, search by your zip code HERE.
