RALLIES AND PROTESTS

  1. Every Tuesday: #RESISTTRUMPTUESDAYS @ CRUZ'S, 12:00 PM, Houston Office of Senator Ted Cruz, 808 Travis Street, Suite 1420, Houston, TX 77002
  2. Every Tuesday#RESISTTRUMPTUESDAY @ CORNYN'S, 11:30 AM, Houston Office of Senator John Cornyn, 5300 Memorial Drive Suite 980, Houston, TX 77007
  3. May 15-19, 2017FLOOD BRIAN BABIN WITH VISITS, LETTERS, PROTESTS, PHONE CALLS, location: all Rep. Babin offices (see event link for details)
    • Congress will be on break again soon. It's time for a town hall and we should be able to talk to our representative, Brian Babin!
    • Drip, drip, drip. What happens with a continuous drip? A flood!Since District 36 is so spread out, it's difficult to ever get a group large enough for a Babin protest. However, even just 2-3 people, every day, can make a difference. Drip, drip, drip.
    • This week, we will flood Babin's district offices with visits, phone calls, letters, and protests. If you are available any day this week, please plan to visit the office closest to you, deliver a letter requesting a town hall and ask his staff when he will be meeting with constituents. We will not accept a telephone town hall!
    • Here are the things we want to do:
      • 1) Stage a protest in the morning from 10-12. Bring signs, demand a town hall, ask for an appointment to meet with Babin, not a staffer.
      • 2) Write a letter demanding a town hall. Personally deliver it to the office with a small bag of candy. Request an appointment -- not with a staffer, with Brian Babin. Ask for his scheduler to call you. Request a town hall.
      • 3) Call his office. Request a town hall. Discuss your concerns about healthcare. Demand that he meet with his constituents, IN PERSON.
      • 4) Follow up. Document how many times you are ignored, or no one follows up with you. Post it here.
      • 5) Take photos of everything you do. Post it here. Brian Babin cannot continue to get away with ignoring us. He should be doing his job!
  4. May 17, 2017JOHN CULBERSON: COUNTRY OVER PARTY — WE WANT TRUMP'S TAX RETURNS RELEASED, 4:30 PM, 10000 Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77024
    • Indivisible Houston and allied organizations will be visiting Representative John Culberson (R-TX) and demanding that he put his country over his Party. He must demand that Trump release his taxes.
    • The GIGANTIC Chicken Don will be attending the event for you to take great pictures and memes to saturate your social media to continue our demand.
  5. May 19, 2017HOT FLASH FRIDAY: SHOW CORNYN OUR OPPOSITION TO CUTS IN WOMEN'S HEALTH CARE, 11:00 AM, Office of Senator John Cornyn, 5300 Memorial Drive, Houston, TX
    • Join us in demonstrating our opposition to cuts and restrictions on women's health care that passed the House recently and are now under consideration by the Senate.  The House bill allows states to opt out of maternity coverage, contraceptive coverage, and care for victims of domestic violence among other things plus "defunding" Planned Parenthood.  Senator Cornyn is a member of the Senate leadership and it looks like this republican administration along with the republican controlled House and Senate are targeting women, , especially poor women, as they cut health care coverage.  So bring signs supporting Planned Parenthood and opposing current efforts to leave Texas women begging for health care coverage.    We'll be picketing in front of the office building where Senator Cornyn's Houston Office is located and at some point we'll send a delegation up to his office to make our position known.   We'll alternate demonstrations outside Cornyn's and Cruz's offices on upcoming Fridays.
  6. May 20, 2017PROTEST AGAINST HOUSTON POLICE DEPARTMENT ENFORCEMENT OF SB 4, 3:00 PM, Houston Police Department, 1200 Travis St, Houston, Texas 77002
    • A demonstration against Houston Police Department enforcement of Senate Bill 4 will be held in front of HPD Headquarters, 1200 Travis St., on Saturday, May 20, 3-5 pm. Afterward, we will march to Discovery Green, 1500 McKinney, to join the Black Lives Matter Rally being held from 5-7 pm. The enactment of Senate Bill 4 presents a significant danger to undocumented immigrants, to people of Mexican descent in general, and to other people of color. This new "Show Me Your Papers Law" will lead to more unjustified deportations, more separation of families, more racial profiling, more violations of supposed constitutional rights, more unreported crimes, and more pain and misery for many people. The Houston Police Department already has a long, ugly history of murdering and abusing people. Now HPD Chief Art Acevedo says he will make sure his officers enforce SB 4 even though he opposed its passage. To this, we can only say: Hell No! SB 4 is a racist, anti-worker law, and it should not be enforced! HPD should not serve as immigration agents! No more deportations! Stop breaking up families! End racial profiling! Stop police murders and brutality!
  7. May 20, 2017BLACK LIVES MATTER HOUSTON MARCH 4 HUMAN RIGHTS, 5:00 PM, Discovery Green, 1500 McKinney St, Houston, Texas 77010
    • The #BLMHOU march for human rights is intended as a unity event while centering Blackness in all of the issues that we are facing in this country, state, city and all while trying to survive under President Agent Orange. This is a march against hate, phobia, and bigotry all are invited.
    • - This event will NOT center whiteness
    • - This event will not be one where you take the time to hug the police
    • - This event is intended to show that we can come together and also RESPECT separate movements.
  8. May 26, 2017HOT FLASH FRIDAY: SHOW CRUZ OUR OPPOSITION TO CUTS IN WOMEN'S HEALTH CARE, 11:00 AM, Office of Senator Ted Cruz, 808 Travis Street, Houston, TX
Senator Cruz is a member of the "Gang of 13" senators -- ALL MALE -- who are working on fashioning the republican version of health care coverage.  Looks like this republican administration along with the republican controlled House and Senate are targeting women, especially poor women, as they cut health care coverage.  So bring signs supporting Planned Parenthood and opposing current efforts to leave Texas women begging for health care coverage.    We'll be picketing in front of the office building downtown where Senator Cruz's Houston Office is located and at some point we'll send a delegation up to his office to make our position known.   We'll visit Cornyn's office the following Friday.
  9. May 31-June 2, 2017CORNYN STAKEOUT, 1:30 PM, 5300 Memorial Drive, Suite 980, Houston, TX 77007
  10. June 3, 2017WEAR ORANGE - HOUSTON, 10:00 AM, Levy Park, 3801 Eastside St, Houston, TX 77098
    • Stand up for safer communities free of gun violence. Come out on Saturday, June 3 for speakers, family-friendly activities, and some light refreshments.
    • Why #WearOrange? Because orange is a color that demands to be seen, and with over 90 Americans dying on the average American day, we have to be visible. So wear orange on National Wear Orange Day (June 2), and then join us on Saturday for Wear Orange Houston!
  11. June 3, 2017RALLY AND CANDLELIGHT VIGIL FOR TRUTH, 6:00 PM, location TBD
    • Join us as we gather together in Houston in solidarity with citizens from around our country on June 3rd and demand an independent investigation to foreign interference in our election, on the business ties and obligations of our President, on any crimes or collusions by our officials. TRANSPARENCY IS OUR RIGHT! #marchfortruth
  12. October 7, 2017NATIONAL POPULAR VOTE MARCH, 11:00 AM, location TBD
    • MARCH GOAL: To help make the 2020 presidential election the first in which the majority of citizens elect the U.S. President and every vote in every state is equal.

HOW TO BECOME A PRECINCT CHAIR

So, are you interested in being a precinct chair? Here are the steps you will need to take:

  1. Find out what precinct you're in:
  2. See if there is currently a precinct chair for your precinct HERE
  3. If there is not a precinct chair currently listed for your precinct and you would like to step up and make a difference, begin the process by contacting your county's Democratic Party (see HOUSTON AREA DEMOCRATIC PARTIES section above for links)

WHO REPRESENTS ME?

In these difficult political times, it is crucial to know not just who represents you in Congress and the Texas Legislature, but also how to contact that person's office. As a constituent, you are their employer and it is your right to let your opinion be known about legislation.

Obviously the first step is identifying who exactly represents you. You should keep handy the contact information for your two US Senators, your US Congressional Member, your State Senator, and your State Representative. There are several sites that can perform this service for you, but here are my recommendations:

  1. Who Represents Me (maintained by the Texas Legislature)
  2. Who Are My Representatives (maintained by Politiwatch)
  3. Find Your Elected Officials (maintained by Common Cause)
  4. Find Your Reps
  5. Contacting Congress (Members of Congress only)

Each of these services should provide you with a link to each representative's webpage that contains contact information.
